SI6.OH-11.

  • Hi,
SI6.OH-11. Jumps to 60HZ when the battery is charged.
I am OFF Grid, community project.
The SI was a new replacement for a 5000kva UPS 48v Inverter that kept 50HZ.
    SI Firmware is all updated.
Early evening and the SI6 has just gone to 60HZ.
And just tested with, loads no loads to lower and raise the voltage , but yet again the Frequency HZ is unstable and is matching the voltage rise and fall.
When the SI6 went high, the battery is full and on float, all DC coupling 5kW PV is shut down, just a couple of 100 watts coming in, Wind turbines output minimal as there is no wind.
2.5kW PV on Ac Coupling AC1 but the sun is setting so not much from that.
No generator, AC2 not used. This SI has been doing this from New.
Any Help please, I have contacted SMA several times but they are very unhelpfull, and the original German retailer will not help.
    ??????
    Hallo,
SI6.OH-11.
    SI Firmware wird all aktualisiert.

  • Hi.
SI off grid in island mode normally controls PV output via frequenzy, depending on SOC and loads in the house. The same here when running in island mode. As long as all PV power can be used, the frequency stays around 50, if lower Power is used, Si changes frequency to reduce PV inverter power. I don't know yet the right numbers, so I can't say if 60 is normal or wrong, I stay most time on grid.

    Regards
    Michael

  • Hi Michael.

    Thanks for your reply.

At 55HZ and above, synchronous motors etc will not function, so I can not use the washing machine or microwave.
The only way to get the HZ down is to load my batteries and bring the battery voltage down, as the HZ from the SI follows the battery voltage. I do not think that this correct.?

    Interesting about the Grid tied.
Some technical guys on a European Sustainability Forum, believe that the SI has a unstable HZ Frequency, and having a 50HZ reference frequency on the AC2 connection might solve my problem. Obviously I do not have the Utility Grid, and in France the SI is not approved for a Grid connection.

We may end up designing a simple APC UPS unit that has a very stable 50HZ to assist the SI back to normal.

  • Fault?

  • Hier ist die aktuelle Antwort von SMA, Tobias Michels, Dienstleistung, Sonnenallee 1, 34266 Niestetal, Deutschland.
    "Sehr Geehrter Herr .........

Here is the latest reply from SMA, Tobias Michels, Service, Sonnenallee 1, 34266 Niestetal, Germany.
    "Dear Mr .........
    thank you for contacting SMA.
As we still wrote in the last E-Mail, the problem is that the DC charger rises up the battery voltage above the charge voltage from the Sunny Island.
If this happens the Sunny Island rises up the frequency to decrease the battery charge. This function is still active to decrease the power AC coupled SMA inverters.
The DC charger may not rise up the battery voltage to a higher level than the charge voltage of the Sunny Island. Here it’s possible to adjust the Sunny Island charge voltage to a higher voltage. The battery charge parameter you will get from the manufacturer of the battery.
The maximum size of DC-coupling depends on the battery capacity, DC loads and so on. There is no direct value. What we see is that battery voltage rises up very fast over the charge voltage of the Sunny Island system. This is the reason for the high frequency.
Please feel free to contact us again if there are any other questions.
Sincerely SMA Serviceteam SMA Solar Technology AG".

So the latest tweaked SI.OH.11. in Off Grid mode is designed to go to 59.99HZ. No mention of this in the published technical data on the SI.?
Modify the Charging sources so they are all lower than the now high SI Float charge setting. No mention of this in the published technical data on the SI.?
No answer to my “How Much is to much DC Coupling”. ?
No answer to why is the High Frequency rise not in the SI published technical data. ?

The SI6.OH-11 that I have purchased is unsafe and is damaging my House appliances and my 48v Gel type Battery Bank.

Please Note….. I now know 6 other SI Owners that have Off Grid SI’s and they do not have problems with the frequency rise. If you have an Old SI, or one that is not the latest tweaked SI.OH.11. please hang on to it, at least yours works.

As you can see from the SMA side/replies that the new SI has this high frequency as standard NOW.!
So hard luck purchaser of a SMA SI, we at SMA have no intension of a replacement or repair. Ha Ha to stupid customers all the way to the BANK.
